Anne Main MP: “After requesting meetings with the Council, the police, residents, and the Social Housing Landlord, Anne Main MP is pleased that it seems that action is finally being taken to help unhappy residents on the Napsbury Estate, who face Anti-Social behaviour on a daily basis. The police are now working with the local community to reduce levels of Anti-social behaviour.
I opposed the Licensing Act which allowed longer opening- hours for pubs and clubs as the consequences of the binge drinking culture are all too apparent in towns and cities all across Britain, with anti-social behaviour and drink-fuelled violence a common occurrence especially on Friday and Saturday night. As we all know St Albans does not escape this.
However, now that the laws are in place it is essential that we ensure that the Government takes the appropriate steps to close down rowdy pubs, clamp down on anti- social behaviour, and prevent the selling of alcohol to children.
I am all in favour of people having a good night out, but the right to have a drink brings with it a responsibility - a responsibility not to disturb local residents in the early hours, and a responsibility to act in accordance with the law.
Many people have asked me about my views on ID cards and I firmly believe they are an ill thought-out concept that I and many experts do not believe will solve any of the threats we face.
On cost, there is a massive bill of £19 billion. On effectiveness, it will fail to stop terrorism, illegal immigration, fraud and ID theft. On privacy, all our fears have been confirmed: it is still a massive reversal of the proper relationship between the citizen and the state.
I am pleased that my colleague the Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, has made it clear that if the Conservative Party wins the next election and he takes over as Home Secretary, his first act will be to do away with the Bill.”
